Is there any of way getting the image placeholders to dynamically resize to the image proportions so that we don’t have these horrible black outlines around them?

try changing background colour

admin >> Corllete Lab Gallery >> general settings >> scroll down to "Background color" >> Change to "FFFFFF" >> click update

Bg should now be white instead of black if i am right.

Thanks I tried that but it was not really what I was trying achieve, however you made me look at the settings again and I think I found the answer

admin >> Corllete Lab Gallery >> general settings >> scroll down to Force Aspect Ratio: and set to disabled
